The Municipality of Farron is located on the northwestern side of the Erimanthos mountain and is one of the largest and most historically important Municipalities of the Prefecture of Achaia. According to tradition, it was built by Faritas, son of the god Hermes (Mercury) and Philomadeia. The Municipality of Farron came into existence in 1835 and by the time of its dissolution in 1912, included 35 villages.
Today it consists of 16 beautiful villages, nestling in dense vegetation and surrounded by waterfalls and countless tributaries of the Peiros river. The Municipal offices are based in Halandritsa, which lies just 17 kilometres from Patras and is at the junction of the large road network of Patras - Kalavrita and Patras - Tripoli. It is worth mentioning that every year, at the end of August, Halandritsa hosts an Exhibition of Farming Machinery and Farming Products of the Achaia area, the only one of its kind in the Municipality.
In the picturesque villages of the Municipality, there is an abundance of historical monuments and archeological sites, the most important of which is the Frankish Tower, or Tower of Tremouille, a settlement dating back to the Mycenaean period, an extensive burial ground of the Mycenaean period, a Roman burial ground and a Venetian fortress. Also noteworthy are the number of Byzantine religious monuments the most characteristic of which is the church of Agios Athanasios, the church of Kimisis Theotokou and the monastery of Chrysopodaritissa.
As we ascend the mountains, the natural environment dominates the landscape with its wild beauty. Fir trees, dense vegetation, rivers, streams, waterfalls and caves make up the landscape of the area. Aromatic plants such as mountain tea, oregano and lime tree leaves, considered to be the best in the world by the inhabitants of the mountain villages, grow in abundance. The frequent appearance of wild animals (hares, hedgehogs, foxes, woodpeckers, partridges, buzzards etc) draw the hiker’s attention.
The Municipality of Farron is ideal for both winter and summer tourism because it combines a beautiful natural environment with a wealth of important cultural elements. The paths traverse a lush landscape while the scattered villages have traditional guesthouses and taverns. The visitor has every reason to depart well-satisfied and of course to return again and again.
